What Does A Certified OBM® Actually Do?
"I know I need help, Victoria, but what exactly do you do?"
I've been asked this question a couple of times since I first became a Certified Online Business Manager® (OBM) in May, 2022.
The Definition of an OBM
The answer to this question starts with what a Certified Online Business Manager is. A Certified OBM, as defined by the International Association of Online Business Managers (IAOBM), is “a virtually based support professional who manages online based businesses, including the day-to-day management of projects, operations, metrics, and team.”
We are the Operations Managers, Chiefs of Staff, and Directors of Operations of the online world, and our role is to ensure that the right things get done at the right time and by the right people.
We complete a rigorous training program to receive the OBM designation and wear it like a badge of honour - but that’s a subject for another day. ;)
What an OBM Does
As an OBM, I help my clients in the following ways:
Keeping them on track and working in their zone of genius.
Translating their goals and priorities into concrete tasks for the team.
Working with the team to ensure things are getting done.
Serving as a sounding board for their ideas.
Organizing and streamlining the operations of their business.
Creating detailed project plans for all business objectives.
Getting them out of managing and into leading.
Recruiting and onboarding new hires.
Managing projects and launches.
Tracking metrics and ensuring progress toward objectives.
Establishing documented processes for all essential activities in the business.
Running weekly team meetings to check in on client projects.
Caring about their business as much as they do.
You might not believe that last one, but it's something that everyone who has worked with me appreciates the most.
